It's Makerspace time!
Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, the Clear Spring Middle School Library Media Center is home to a new Makerspace. In the Makerspace, students have access to Sphero robots, MaKey MaKey electronics kits, Keva building planks, Legos, arts and craft supplies, and a variety of other computational thinking tools and creative materials. Students have the opportunity to use the Makerspace on their own during lunch periods and with their classes as scheduled by teachers.
Storyboard That! with 7th Grade ELA
7th grade ELA classes have just read The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, a story by Rod Serling that was featured on an episode of the original Twilight Zone TV series. Now they are using Storyboard That (storyboardthat.com) to recreate scenes from the story in which there were character conflicts. Storyboard That is a great tool to help kids understand mood, setting, characterization, and other elements of literature.
App Smashing with 6th Grade ELA!
6th grade ELA classes at CSMS are APP SMASHING! App smashing is using multiple apps together to create a finished product. We used Google Docs to brainstorm and record a list of character traits, Tagxedo to put the traits into a word cloud, and Padlet to create a class collection of word clouds. Google Classroom--We're Going Paperless!
CSMS is going paperless with Google Classroom! Here are Mrs. McCauley's 8th grade ELA students working on an essay in their Classroom accounts. Using Classroom, students can create, save, and hand in their work in a variety of different formats, and teachers can give feedback in real time while kids are working. Classroom is being piloted by Mrs. McCauley, Mrs. Daugherty, and Mrs. Mowen, but other CSMS teachers are experimenting to see how it can help them.
Andy Warhol-Inspired Collages
CSMS 8th Grade Digital Keyboarding and Technology students took these pictures with smartphones and flip cams, and used various programs and websites to create these Andy Warhol-inspired collages. Enjoy!

Digital Photography at CSMS
Our 8th grade Keyboarding and Digital Technology classes are currently working on a Digital Photography unit. Students were allowed to bring their smartphones, tablets, and iPods to school and use them to take pictures using some basic photography guidelines. These are some samples from our first session taking pictures outside.
